Social justice film series
Our film series aims to address social issues in our communities. This carefully curated series will highlight topics such as racial inequality, environmental justice, gender equity, LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, and much more. By exploring these critical themes through the powerful medium of film, AfroMundo hopes to inspire, educate, and foster meaningful discussions as a catalyst for communal empowerment and change.

A panel discussion will follow each film, bringing together diverse voices and experts to promote respectful dialogue and cultivate a greater understanding of vital issues. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local community partners ranging from grassroots organizations to established advocacy groups, who will set up tables to share valuable resources and information.

In support of AfroMundo, Xiomara Fortuna, Queen of Fusion, returns to Albuquerque for a concert featuring songs from her latest album, Etaquetuves.

Xiomara Fortuna at the 2022 AfroMundo Festival
Rolling Stone selected 1 of Fortuna's 14 albums, Viendoaver, as #9 in a list of 35 Best Spanish-Language and Bilingual Albums of 2021.
From Sounds and Colours:

A longtime pioneer of Dominican roots music, Xiomara Fortuna’s catalogue is a veritable representation of our island’s musical diversity. Whether collaborating with full-blown orchestras or homegrown beatmakers, the Dominican ‘Queen of Fusion’ navigates the kaleidoscopes of syncretic folklore, urban politics, and popular culture with grace and ease. Some of her albums, such as Kumbajei and Son Verdad, are encyclopaedic and far reaching in nature, interpreting rural folk tales and old countryside choirs with a modern approach, while her very first album, De La Loma Al Llano from 1984, is an incredible journey into rural kiskeya and meticulous iterations of Afro-Dominican fusion. Her newest work, Viendoaver, is fresh and socio-politically charged, coupling hard-hitting electronics with dembow, rap consciente, reguetón, and a futuristic direction for our country’s sound.

OUR INAUGURAL EVENT

Two People dressed in white at Papa Legba event, altar, yellow flowers

On Sunday June 13, 2021 AfroMundo celebrated Papá Legbá—San Antonio in the Dominican pantheon. After more than a year in isolation due to Covid-19, it was fitting that our inaugural event demystify Afro syncretic traditions and be in honor of Papá Legbá, the Road Opener, the lua who facilitates communication between the earthly, the spiritual, and the divine.

Our deepest gratitude to Casa Barelas for opening their doors to us.
